A Letter From Steven Smith

Can't wait to get to Richmond!

The anticipation is exhilarating since it's been a long time coming. The cross country drive from New Mexico in a few weeks will be a great way to ponder this next step in life's journey.

I've been learning so much about the vibrancy of the arts in Richmond. There is such a buzz of energy about the galleries, museums, schools and the performing arts. It really underlies the interplay and richness of the arts about which I feel very strongly. I'm very excited about the prospects of finding ways to bring artistic expression and the many creative spirits we have in town together in engaging, thought-provoking and entertaining projects.

CenterStage is such a fantastic new hot spot in the downtown scene. It transcends the idea of a single concert hall, encompassing many cool spaces. I want to see CenterStage and its resident organizations, especially the Symphony, send out waves of imagination and creativity from our core throughout the region. Being a part of First Fridays expanding east is a great step. but beyond that, I hope that those of us that work and play there can harness the energy and enthusiasm we have and unite with others to collectively dream of new possibilities.

"We are such stuff as dreams are made on..." as ol' Bill Shakespeare says in "The Tempest." It is a thought that at once captures life's fleeting nature and the hopefulness for making the most of it all the time. Composers from Tchaikovsky to Duke Ellington to Sting have been inspired by these thoughts. Connections like that between literature, visual arts, drama and music are the possibilities we can dream on.

What a fantastic place to be! See y'all soon...
